Issue Dec 01-31 2025: On December 14, 2025, the rightwing candidate José Antonio Kast was elected the next president of Chile, securing an overwhelming victory in the second-round election with nearly 59% of the vote against the 41% for Communist Jeannete Jara’s leftwing coalition. Verified by the Servicio Electoral de Chile (Servel), Kast’s lead of almost 20 percentage points generated a congratulations call from incumbent President Gabriel Boric and similar messages from other world leaders, as well as from Jara. Kast, an ultra-Catholic lawyer and former congressman, will become the first president with open sympathies for the dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990) since the return to democracy. Editorialists and pundits were eager to weigh in.
