Dramatic Election in Chile

Issue Nov 12-18 2025: On November 16, 2025, Chile held its general election in which eight candidates sought the presidency to succeed leftist Gabriel Boric. Leftist candidate Jeannette Jara edged out extreme conservative José Antonio Kast of the Partido Republicano to secure the top two spots, and now they will head toward the December 14 runoff. Jara, the ruling party and Christian Democrat candidate, as well as a former Labor Minister, won the first round but underperformed expectations with only 26.6% of the vote, against Kast’s 24.2%. Observers pointed out that the campaign was dominated by fears of insecurity and rising crime. Commentators had plenty to say.
