Issue Oct 15-21 2025: On October 19, 2025, Rodrigo Paz won the presidential runoff to become Bolivia’s next president. He secured 54.5% of the vote, defeating former right-wing President Jorge Tuto Quiroga, who received 45.4%. Paz’s victory put an end to 20 years of socialist governments in Bolivia. He previously served as a congressional deputy, mayor of Tarija, and senator. His campaign slogan was “Capitalism for All,” while he promised to open Bolivia to the world, working with all sectors of society to overcome the crisis, offering cheap credit for entrepreneurs, reducing taxes and tariffs, and legalizing “chuto” (smuggled) vehicles (though promising to return stolen ones). He confronts the challenge of leading Bolivia out of its worst economic crisis in four decades. Editorialists and pundits were prepared.
