A New President in Peru and a Nobel Laureate in Venezuela

Issue 08-14 2025: On October 10, 2025, Peru’s one-chamber legislature removed Dina Boluarte from the presidency, citing her “permanent moral incapacity,” and installed Congress’s Speaker José Jerí as acting president just six months before the 2026 elections. Peru’s first female president, Boluarte had served for two years and ten months, having assumed office in late 2022 after the impeachment of her predecessor and former running mate, Pedro Castillo. And on the same day, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, recognizing her for “her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela” and “her struggle for a fair and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.” Editorialists and commentators rose to the challenge.
