Latin America Reacts to the Conviction of Former President Jair Bolsonaro for his Attempted Coup in Brazil

Issue Sep 10-16 2025: On September 11, 2025, Brazil’s Supreme Court convicted former President Jair Bolsonaro for coup plotting and sentenced him to 27 years in prison. The momentous trial divided the nation and drew fury from U.S. President Donald Trump. The sentence, fully enforced, would see the 70-year-old far-right leader spend the rest of his days in jail. Judges voted 4-1 to convict Bolsonaro of plotting to overthrow Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva following his victory in the October 2022 election. Bolsonaro can appeal the verdict. The was no dearth of comment.
