Amazon Summit in Colombia

Issue Aug 20-26 2025: On August 22, 2025, the leaders of eight South American nations met in Colombia for the 5th Summit of Amazonian Countries with calls for the protection of the forest they share. They approved the Bogotá Declaration, a document that established a unified position for COP30, scheduled for November 10-21, 2025, in Belém do Pará, Brazil. This summit, led by Presidents Gustavo Petro of Colombia, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil, and Luis Arce of Bolivia, together with Ecuadorian Vice President María José Pinto, was characterized as part of the continuing effort to improve regional cooperation aimed at both preserving the world’s largest tropical forest and impowering the native peoples who live there.
