Dramatic Collapse of the Ruling Movimiento Al Socialismo in Bolivia

Issue Aug 13-19 2025: On August 17, 2025, after almost two decades of rule by the Movimiento Al Socialismo or MAS in Bolivia, voters sent two right-leaning candidates to Bolivia’s presidential election run-off on October 19, 2025. Opposition senator Rodrigo Paz Pereira of the Partido Demócrata Cristiano led with 32%, followed by former President Jorge ‘Tuto’ Quiroga (having served from 2001 to 2002) of the Alianza Libre, who received 27%. The new president will to be sworn in on November 8. Pundits and editorialists had thoughts.
