It was like a gift for Valentine’s Day, 1955. Forty tons of “communist” books were placed at President Richard M. Nixon’s feet before being hauled off to the fire, a purge that marked the beginning of a campaign to control Guatemalan minds. This campaign might well very have been called “The Overthrow of Arbenz: Part 2” but declassified CIA documents refer to it as “PBHistory,” the continuation of “PBSuccess,” the operation created to bring Carlos Castillo Armas to power.
