Biden’s Underwhelming Summit of the Americas

The IX Summit of the Americas was held in Los Angeles, CA, from June 6 to 10, hosted by U.S. President Joe Biden. While the Biden administration had originally hoped that the much-anticipated summit would help jumpstart a new era of U.S. engagement with Latin America and the Caribbean, it took place under a cloud of controversy over Biden’s decision not to invite the leaders of Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. As a result, the leaders of several countries, led by Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, decided to boycott the event. Many Latin Americans also condemned the summit for its unambitious agenda, while others questioned the need for such summits. Editorialists and pundits had many opinions to offer.
