Imprisonment of Political Opposition in Nicaragua Threatens Democracy

In anticipation of the upcoming November presidential election in Nicaragua, 32 political opposition figures and potential presidential candidates have been arrested by the country’s government forces for charges of “inciting hate and violence” in the country. These arrests, which began in late May, continued throughout the summer and represent an attempt by the Ortega government to extend its power further into the future. As a result, many in the international community are closely watching the events in order respond to the actions of the Nicaraguan government.
