Venezuela’s 2020 Legislative Elections Widely Condemned as Undemocratic

On December 6, 2020, Venezuela held elections to decide who would control its unicameral legislature, the Asamblea Nacional, or AN. Since the last legislative election, the opposition has controlled the chamber, presided over by Juan Guaidó, who was also recognized by many countries around the world as the Provisional or Interim President of Venezuela after President Nicolás Maduro was sworn in for another six-year term in January 2019 following elections that were widely viewed as fraudulent. Most of the opposition parties boycotted the recent election because of the many restrictions imposed by the Maduro government. As a consequence, just over 30% (by official estimates) of Venezuelans turned out to vote, a majority of whom voted for the supporters of President Maduro. The election was generally condemned as illegitimate, around the region and around the world, and pundits had much to offer in the way of interpretation.
