Bolivia’s MAS Party Replaces Evo Morales as its Presidential Candidate
!!!
On January 19, 2020, the Movimiento al Socialismo or MAS, the party of former Bolivian President Evo Morales, chose Luis Arce, the former Minister of Economy, as its candidate for president in the upcoming election. Ex-Chancellor David Choquehuanca will be his running mate. The new election will be held because of the debacle that occurred after the October 20, 2019 election in which Morales claimed to have won a fourth term in the first round. The election was marked by counting irregularities and allegations of fraud. The Organization of American States (OAS) affirmed that there were “malicious operations.” Morales eventually resigned under pressure from the armed forces, and went into peripatetic exile, first in Mexico, and later in Argentina. The switch to Arce came after Morales caused an international uproar by musing in a radio interview about his desire to create armed civilian militias similar to the notorious “colectivos” in Venezuela, groups viewed by many as paramilitary death squads.
