Chaotic Struggle in Venezuela Over Leadership of the Asamblea Nacional

Venezuela’s opposition leader, Juan Guaidó, was sworn in for another term as president of Venezuela’s unicameral legislature, the Asamblea Nacional or AN, on January 7, 2020, after a rancorous standoff with Venezuelan military personnel and police officers who initially prevented him from entering the building. In his absence, a plurality, but reportedly not a quorum, of members elected Luis Parra, another member of the opposition, who was recently ejected from his own party for purported corruption. Parra is also widely viewed as the pathetic pawn of President Nicolás Maduro. Later, Guaidó and a reported majority of AN members entered the chamber and voted him into office for a second time. Across the ideological spectrum in Latin America, observers condemned the Maduro government’s attempt to strong arm the process.
