Anonymous U.S. officials said that Diosdado Cabello, first vice president of the Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela (PSUV), attended a meeting in July in Caracas with negotiators for the president of the United States, Donald Trump. These meetings were reportedly unknown to President Nicolás Maduro. While Cabello passionately denied that he met with the Gringos, insisting that Maduro was aware of all his activities, insiders argued otherwise. Eventually both the U.S. and Venezuelan government admitted that talks had been taking place. Venezuela remains in a deteriorating state of flux, with opposition leader Juan Guaidó, supported by the U.S. and dozens of other countries, unable to attract enough military support to take power and hold new elections, while Maduro cannot find a formula for economic recovery in the face of increasingly stringent U.S. sanctions, failing oil production, falling revenues, a collapsed currency, and massive outward migration of the population.
