Historic Chilean Teachers’ Strike

Teachers in Chile have been protesting a lack of benefits and unjust treatment by the government. Beginning in June, the Association of Teachers has been on strike. They have not gone to work and instead participated in organizing and strategy events to negotiate a better deal with the Chilean government. Throughout the strike, the Chilean Ministry of Education and the Association of Teachers have been negotiating terms to end the strike, yet after multiple proposals, the Association voted to remain on strike. On July 22, the Association took its final vote that ended the 51 days of strike. The key actors in the conflict included the Minister of Education Marcela Cubillos and the president of the Association of Teachers, Mario Aguilar. Minister Cubillos’ approval rating has been on a sharp decline amid the strikes, resulting from her inability to successfully put an end to the protests.
