Former Heroic Brazilian Judge Loses his Prestigious Reputation Due to Leaks
!!!
–Researched and Written by Joseph Walford—
Leaks known as Vaza Jato provided evidence that Sergio Moro, the (supposedly neutral) judge who presided over the Lava Jato anti-corruption trial from 2014-2018, had been supplying information to Deltan Dallagnol, the lead prosecutor in the trial against Luiz Inacio “Lula” da Silva, former president and leader of the Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT, Workers’ Party). The leaked messages, exposed by investigative journalism bureau The Intercept in June 2019, suggest Judge Moro’s bias which resulted in Lula’s imprisonment and subsequent exclusion from running in the 2018 presidential election in the Brazil. The Intercept was previously known for publishing Edward Snowden’s leaks which in 2014 implicated, amongst other exposés, the NSA in drone strikes in the Middle East that had killed civilians, and is run by Glenn Greenwald, husband of David Miranda, a Brazilian congressman. Brazilian hackers exploited a weakness in security in the Telegram messaging application to retrieve messages sent between Moro and Dallagnol. Despite the wide-ranging repercussions of these leaks, many Brazilian news sources have been reluctant to cover and comment upon the new revelations, apart from Folha de S. Paulo, with whom current Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has had an uncomfortable relationship even before his assumption of the presidency earlier this year. Mr. Bolsonaro had previously called Folha “fake news” and dismissed it as a “joke of a magazine.”
