Venezuelans Continue to Pour into Colombia with International Bridges Reopened

On June 8, President Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela reopened two international bridges between the Venezuelan state Táchira and the Colombian department Norte de Santander. The bridges span the natural barrier between the countries, the Táchira River. Many Venezuelans had continued to cross the river during the three-and-a-half-month closure of the border, through illegal border crossings called “trochas.” These same bridges were the center of attention worldwide in February when the entrance of international forces with humanitarian aid was blocked by the Maduro regime, and the blockades from that incident remain in place.
