On April 27, 2019, Former Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva gave his first interview since going to prison in April 2018, in which he bemoaned the travesty that a “band of malucos” (“madmen”) is governing his country. Lula was convicted on corruption charges that his supporters, in Brazil and around the world, say were really the fruit of a prolonged political campaign against him and his left-leaning Workers’ Party or PT. President Jair Bolsonaro entered office in January 2019, after defeating the PT candidate Fernando Haddad, who replaced Lula when he was banned from running. Bolsonaro defended his government by offering that Lula’s government was made up of a “bunch of cachaceiros,” or drunkards. Observers, including Former President Dilma Rousseff, noted Bolsonaro’s plummeting popularity and Lula’s continuing support, and looked for larger meaning.
