Uproar in Latin American Media After Julian Assange’s Expulsion from Ecuador’s Embassy in London

On April 11, 2019, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was arrested in the United Kingdom, and hauled out of the Ecuadorian embassy in London after the government of President Lenín Moreno revoked his seven-year asylum. The action possibly cleared a path for his extradition to the United States. Viewers around the world watched video of a gesticulating, heavily bearded, and seemingly feeble Assange being carried out by police. Assange’s supporters in Latin America said Ecuador had abandoned him to appease the United States, and that the dissolution of his asylum was illegal. They insist that Assange is a hero of free speech for exposing the hidden abuses of power by powerful governments, especially the United States. Yet his critics argue that he is an unscrupulous, narcissistic, and irresponsible hacker who undermined the security and democratic systems of multiple countries.
