Morales Faces Fierce Protest in the Wake of His Fourth Bid for the Bolivian Presidency

On November 28, 2018, Bolivia’s Tribunal Constitucional Plurinacional (TCP) overturned constitutional reelection limits, allowing current Head of State Evo Morales to bid for the presidency a fourth time, potentially extending his 12-year-long consecutive leadership into 2025. Ironically, this decision overturns the two-term reelection rule that Morales’ government put in place with the new 2009 constitution. Morales, already in office, was able to run for president two more times, extending his reign until 2019. With campaign season approaching, in February of 2016, a constitutional referendum that would have allowed the Morales-Linera regime to run for a third consecutive term failed with 51.3% of Bolivians voting “No.”
