The Fall Out from Daniel Ortega’s Repressive Rule in Nicaragua

On April 18, 2018, protesters gathered in Managua, Nicaragua, and in six other cities around the country to publicly object to social security reforms that increased contributions and lowered benefits. Since the start of these protests, the issue at hand has turned to the broader repressive government and resulted in over 300 deaths. The violence is largely attributed to Nicaragua’s police forces and paramilitary groups who have been seen to approach protests with “shoot to kill” orders. In the violent months that have passed, Nicaraguan president Daniel Ortega has set out to silence all of those who oppose his presidency, most pointedly journalists, activists, and demonstrators. Despite efforts by religious leaders to mitigate peace talks, the country is facing continuing violence and repression, and sanctions from the international community.
