President Ortega’s Violent Counterattack against Protesters in Nicaragua

During the final weeks of June 2018, repression of demonstrations against the government of President Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua (ongoing since April 19) took a bloody turn when paramilitary groups loyal to Ortega opened fire on protesters. Church-backed talks about political transition also collapsed. Ortega sympathizers and police units moved to dismantle roadblocks by protesters for weeks between Managua and Masaya, a town about 15 miles southeast of the capital. Government forces claimed that the demonstrators had “kidnapped” the city. Since the demonstrations began in April, more than 200 protesters have been killed, and over 1,300 injured. Pundit criticism surged across the ideological spectrum.
