Massive Numbers of Nicaraguans Call on President Daniel Ortega to Step Down

Amid protests and violent repression that has left more than 60 people dead, hundreds injured, and many others “disappeared” in Nicaragua, a growing movement emerged in late April, 2018 demanding President Daniel Ortega’s resignation, along with that of his wife, Vice President Rosario Murillo. The deadly action by police against demonstrators, along with censorship of television news, generated broad international condemnation. Ortega withdrew proposed changes to the social security system that had triggered the initial protests. Yet the demonstrators, who were originally mostly students and retirees, but who grew in numbers and diversity, did not back down. The Catholic Church also got involved in an effort to mediate the tense situation. Journalists, novelists, academics, and diplomats weighed in.
