Latin Americans Mark the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Death of Ernesto “Che” Guevara

El Che, as he is known, was a comrade in arms of Fidel and Raúl Castro during their guerrilla struggle in Cuba’s Sierra Maestra that overthrew the bloody dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista in 1959. And though he died in Bolivia in 1967, fifty years ago this month, in Latin America he remains a figure of towering stature for many people, and a prime example of villainy for others. His much-reproduced image has become emblematic for later generations of young people in the fight against social injustice, with reverberations in politics, cinema, literature, fine arts, and music. Consequently, during the first week of October 2017, commemorative ceremonies were carried out in many countries (especially Cuba and Bolivia), while commentators had much to say about the meaning of his legacy.
