Former President of Peru Alejandro Toledo Reportedly on the Lam after Accusations that He Accepted Bribes

Investigations into bribes by Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht are threatening politicians across Latin America, and have now sparked drama in Peru. The Peruvian attorney general announced that he would seek the arrest of former President Alejandro Toledo on money laundering and influence-trafficking charges, though bribes by Odebrecht were also paid out for projects built during the Alan García and Ollanta Humala administrations. Toledo fared badly in his 2016 reelection campaign (he finished in eighth place), but Peruvians are still in shock over allegations against the pro-democracy activist who led the movement that forced Alberto Fujimori to resign. While Toledo has so far declined the invitation to return to Peru, he has vociferously declared his innocence. Observers note that he will not likely be the last former Latin American president to be indicted.
