Moving President Dilma Rousseff (and Leftist Government) Toward the Exit in Brazil

On August 9, 2016 the huge majority of Brazil’s Senate voted to approve a report calling for the permanent removal of President Dilma Rousseff, sending her impeachment process into its final phase, the impeachment trial. It is expected to open around August 25, just four days after the closing ceremony of the Olympics, and to last around five days, ending with an up or down vote. Rousseff is accused of mismanagement of public revenues by borrowing money from state-owned banks to pay for social programs without including these “loans” in the federal accounting results. Rousseff has reiterated her innocence, noting that former presidents employed similar practices. She denies breaking budget laws and argues she is the victim of a right-wing conspiracy to unseat a left-leaning government that has long advanced the interests of Brazil’s poor.
