Protests and “National Strike” Against the Rafael Correa Administration in Ecuador

In recent weeks a large collection of unconnected groups, including indigenous communities, medical doctors and nursing associations, teachers’ unions, senior citizen organizations, and business owners, have organized large protest marches all over Ecuador.  Shouting slogans and waving banners, they have blocked roads and clashed with police, and their main target is President Correa.  Though an extremely popular President for his first years in office, a combination of sagging oil prices (forcing cutbacks in government programs), and ham-handed policies have caused his approval ratings to plummet.
