Epic Fail at the OAS Concerning Venezuela

Since the beginning of April 2017, Venezuela has experienced repeated waves of demonstrations. Most of these mobilizations have been in protest of President Nicolás Maduro’s government, and many of them have turned violent, leaving almost 80 people dead, thousands wounded, and many hundreds detained. The protesters want to halt the non-democratically elected constitutional assembly that Maduro is organizing, a process that he is pursuing despite its clear lack of support among his fellow Venezuelans. On June 19, 2017, the foreign ministers of the 34 members of the Organization of American States (OAS) met in Mexico and tried to formulate an appropriate response. The attempt, spearheaded by the United States, Mexico, and Peru, failed. Journalists throughout Latin America examined the aborted effort, noted the worsening situation in Venezuela, and offered their thoughts.
