Cuba has been at the forefront of some areas of human security by fostering high literacy rates, making efforts to close gender gaps, and providing healthcare to Cubans and foreigners alike. While the country’s communist/socialist state subsidizes many of these sectors to relieve individual burdens, the average Cuban salary is not substantial enough to cover remaining costs. After the government’s most recent attempt to resolve this problem by increasing the minimum wage, citizens are still confronted with financial shortcomings.
