The destruction and exploitation of natural resources in Paraguay’s Western Chaco region have become so acute that citizens in the area along with international NGOs are urging the Paraguayan government to follow through on laws and promises to protect the land.

Tapirs live in forests throughout the Caribbean, but because of deforestation, they are in danger of going extinct. Initiatives have been created to help the population slowly grow again.

“Little progress has been made in predicting future [climate] disasters,” lamented Guillermo Gutiérrez, head of Peru’s Servicio Nacional de Hidrología y Meterología (SENAMHI). Still, “elaboration” projects could help officials and citizens to prepare better.
